Do you have unwanted hair and are sick of shaving, plucking, and waxing? Then laser hair removal may be for you. Here are some frequently asked questions about this dermatological treatment, explained.
What is laser hair removal? This is a procedure that slows or stops growth of hair from certain areas of the body using a long pulse laser and is performed by a specialist or doctor usually at a laser medical spa. The laser is pointed at freshly shaven skin, and the laser heat prevents hair follicles from growing. This can vastly reduce the amount of body hair that grows in the area in the future.
How does this procedure work? The lasers used will emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This melanin will then be stunted once the laser hits it, preventing any growth.
How many treatments do I need to be successful? It depends on your skin and hair color, as laser removal works the best on those with fair skin and dark hair. Having dark hair on pale skin will make it easier for the laser to pick up on hair. Those with blonde or red hair sometimes have trouble because their hair is too lightly colored. Since you have multiple hair follicles on your face and they all enter different stages of growth at different times, you should expect to have to go in for about six to eight treatments. Ideally, each treatment will be at an eight week interval.
What hair is best for this treatment? Laser treatment works the best on coarse hair, as it is generally thicker and darker, making it easier for the laser to pick up. It is not recommended for treating thinning hair or downy peach fuzz, as these hairs are not easily seen by the machine.
Is laser removal painful? It depends on your level of pain tolerance, but generally laser removal feels just like getting a wax. Most laser hair removal centers will have you put a topical anesthetic cream onto the treatment area about 30 minutes prior to the service. Some also use other methods such as blowing really cold air onto the area to help lessen discomfort.
Is laser hair removal permanent? While the FDA has approved this method for permanent hair reduction, laser removal cannot guarantee 100% clearance of hair in any area. With quality treatments, the coarse hair can be removed, but the lasers cannot remove finer hairs. Typically, a patient will be able to notice how much reduction was achieved after six months of treatment. Some hair follicles will also regenerate so often maintenance treatments are recommended 2 times per year.
Is this a popular hair removal method? According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, about one million laser hair removal treatments were performed in the U.S. last year. From facial hair to underarms to the bikini area, this treatment has been completed on all types of patients.
