Why You Should Schedule a Med Spa Visit for Yourself This Year

March 13, 2019

Skin care has become an increasingly important part of most beauty regimens. We want acne-free, wrinkle-free, soft, dewy skin, free of any fine lines and wrinkles. However,

What is a Med Spa?

According to the American Med Spa Association, a med spa is a blend between an aesthetic medical center and a day spa. You might go to a med spa for Botox or fillers, acne therapy, or getting medical-grade facials and peels. At most med spas, you can also purchase medical-grade skin care products. You wouldn't undergo any surgical procedures at a med spa, and a licensed healthcare professional is available at all times.

Note that you can't get the medical procedures offered at the med spa at a regular day spa and the atmosphere may vary. Some might be more relaxation driven, while others are more clinical. In either case though, a med spa wants to see results. Most med spas will have a list of services available on their website that you can view ahead of time.

What Should I Know When Choosing a Med Spa?

Though not everything is carried out by a doctor, there should be a supervising healthcare provider available at all times. This is important for your own safety. Some med spas offer free consultations, which are also a great option, and one you should take advantage of. You'll get to know the services, the spa options, the prices, and all risks and benefits before undergoing the procedure or signing on. You'll also get to view the spa, and see if you feel comfortable there. Though the goal is better skin, you also want to have a relaxing experience!

And don't be afraid to do your research online -- check reviews carefully and see what their reputation is like. Getting a personal referral to a med spa is also a great reference check and means that the person referring was satisfied and pleased with the results and experience.

How Else Can I Take Care of My Skin?

Wrinkles and other signs of skin aging can often be attributed to sun exposure. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that over 90% of the visible changes in our skin in terms of aging are sun-related. Simply wearing sunscreen with SPF 15 can lead to 24% less skin aging than those who don't wear sunscreen. The good news for you is that many moisturizers these days now incorporate SPF in their products, so it's even easier to protect your skin from the sun.

If you have a dermatologist, follow their advice -- don't skip steps. Staying hydrated can also lead to healthier skin, as can eating right and exercising. Not smoking and reducing stress where possible can also lead to happier skin. And remember: sometimes it's worth shelling out a little more money for products that work.

Try visiting a med spa if you need a skin reset. You'll come away not just relaxed, but also on the path to better skin and skincare. It might just be the big step you need to take!
